12 LIFE LESSONS

Life is a journey filled with experiences, some joyful, others challenging, each one offering an opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve. Along the way, we gather wisdom not just from our successes, but also from what we deem failures, relationships, and quiet reflections. The following life lessons serve as gentle reminders and guiding principles that can help navigate life with more clarity, purpose, and peace. Failure is not the opposite of success — it's part of it. Mistakes teach more than easy wins ever will. Discomfort means you’re growing. Growth happens when you stretch beyond the familiar. Discipline beats motivation. Motivation is fleeting. Discipline builds results. Wake up early and always see the beautiful rising sun. Meditate to enjoy the essence of enjoying the present. Don't overthink about the future. Everything happens for a reason. Never fear, because there is nothing to fear. Visualise your dream lifestyle every day. Strongly believe you will live that life...

As I get Old

They told us it was just a number, but the reality is that age is more than just a number. It marks a significant change in our bodies and lifestyles. Some get wise as they age, whilst foolishness abounds in others. As I get older, I have come to realise several things. 1. Simplicity wins. As you age, you realise that the minimalistic principle is the best. You crave simple things in life, provided that you can meet your needs. 2. Friends, even the close ones, will not stay in your life forever. The energy diminishes as you age. 3. The most important relationship is not the one you have with your children or spouse, but with yourself. 4. Nobody cares about your hard work, but the results. 5. Heartache and failure are normal. 6. Truthfulness becomes a habit 7. Quality over quantity. 8. The difference between 20 and 40 is not 20. Time really flies when you are 20 years. 9. Petite always wins. So, when choosing your partner, get yourself a beautiful petite one. 10. December is not as...

These people have understood that life is a game, and human psychology has the upper hand in these streets. Always trust your gut. Never ignore your intuition if something feels wrong. 2. The use of first names increases intimacy and connection. Nobody cares about your surname unless it has some political significance. 3. When negotiating, ask open-ended questions. This encourages detailed answers. 4. Do not die in your own cocoon. Ask for a favour. It increases your likability. 5. Confront your fears. Understand that you did not have it before, so you have nothing to lose but something to gain. 6. Are The Young People Justified to Protest?

It has always been the case in many political rallies and manifestos. It all started as a slogan to woo votes from the under-35s, which they have always found a way to do. In the past, you could lie to people because social media was still in its infancy. Information could not be easily accessed and stored, except by the mainstream media stations. They would commit all the atrocities and get away with them because they dictated what should appear in the mainstream media. In fact, it was only KBC that had the outright privilege of doing the recordings, and everyone depended on this government media house and its affiliated vernacular stations for news. Our parents worshipped the state and feared to criticise the state for any wrongdoing. The few who raised their voices risked their lives, and most of them ended up in torture chambers.  The likes of Raila Amollo Odinga, Achieng Oneko, Charles Rubia, and Paul Muite, among others, were young when they fought for the second liberation. ...

Are You a Man Under 30 Years? Here are 9-Under-30-Years Commandments

9 Advices to a Man Under 30 Years  Growing up, I never had the privilege to get advice from a 30-year-old man on what awaited me when I hit the third floor. I guess growing up with a career dad did not do me all the good but he did his part by ensuring that we had a comfortable life. I therefore had to figure things out myself after getting to 30 years old. Here are my lessons that might also help you. 1. Until you have defined what life is, never commit to a woman. 2. Do not take long before you move out of your parents' house. Even as you do this, always be ready to go back when things do not work out, because at some point in life, you will need to rethink and restrategise. 3. If you have an income in your 20s, use that money to build yourself. If you are into land, buy as much as you can. I always tell my students, if at any point in life, you have the resources but do not know where to invest, just go and buy a piece of land.  4. Do not spend more than two years in a job ...

Gen Zs Shouldn't Tolerate

As a millennial, I now know what they did to us, and probably what they did to our parents so that they could do whatever they deemed fit. Thank goodness, we had a chance to raise our young siblings and shield them from the Gen X and baby boomers syndrome that made Moi and the other dictatorial leaders have a field day. Kibaki never did leaders with Moi-esque any good by giving us free education and improved infrastructure that made access to information easy. We are at a time when information is everywhere. In such times, Gen Zs should never allow the normalisation of: 1. Being threatened. Because it is through such that fear is instilled. As young kids, they never allowed us to ask questions. Punishment was like a death sentence, all in the name of "instilling discipline." 2. Be looked down upon. Always know your value, and do not let any person demean you. 3. Suppression: If something does not work well with you, just say it. The worst they can do to you is what you have...

Beware of the New Trick Used by Bolt Drivers

Amidst the many complaints by the Kenyan taxi drivers, especially those on the Bolt platform, about the rising cost of fuel, the platform has not considered this and done a price review; some of them have devised ways of "stealing" from innocent clients. Normally, when you request a ride, the price charged is indicated, and the client decides whether they will pick that specific ride. So on Wednesday, a friend of mine used Bolt to request a ride from Nairobi West to Upper Hill. From the app, the amount was 260 shillings, and up to the point when she was almost alighting, the amount was still the same. So when he reached his destination, he paid the Bolt guy the 260 bob, but to his surprise, he was informed that the cost was 380 shillings. "How is this possible, yet it was 240?" He gently asked because he did not want to cause any altercations. The guy informed him that she should confirm from his side, and true to his word, the amount was 380 shillings. When he to...

Master the ART of Dark Psychology

Photo: Courtesy   I am sure ya'll have found yourselves in uncomfortable situations. A situation where your boss or an older person demeans you. That would happen in the 1980s and '90s because people lived in fear. Children were punished and put into situations as if it were the end of the world. Earlier generations were taught to submit and never question anything, but Gen Z cannot accept such nonsense. The millennials went through the same torment, but they are slowly coming out of it. Here are several psychology hacks that can help you put someone who is demeaning you into his/her own place. Dark psychology has for a long time been used by narcissists, but you can also use it for your own benefit. Without considering gaslighting,...

What is Your Treasure?

A few years ago when I was in college, we had a discussion with my friends on what mattered to each one of us. Someone was asked, in the event of a fire, people drowning, or even an Earthquake, and you happen to be with the whole of your family in that situation, who or what would you save? Say you had your parents, sisters, brothers, your laptop, money, gold, wife, and children, who or what will you save? I want to pose the same question to you. Who or what will you save? I know how tricky it is. I do understand because it wasn't easy for us too. Somehow some of us felt like we would save our parents, and in the order of priority mom the dad, whereas some claimed that they would save their children. But again, I love my wife. She is the mother of my children. If I save my children and let their mother drown or get burnt, how will my children view me? Were it not for my parents, I wouldn't be here, I also do love them. In all honesty, they would be the first ones to be saved. ...

Don't Be a Snitch

Image Courtesy of Aleksandr Grechanyuk A story is told of an Egyptian woman who sought the services of medics on an issue that turned out to implicate her and expose her dirty linen in public. Approaching the doctors in a very furious state, she insisted that her husband's semen be tested because they had tried getting a child together and something seemed not to work. The poor man was speechless and wondered what could be the issue because they already had three children. The man agreed to the test and his semen was taken and tested upon the wish of the lovely wife. To the surprise of the doctors and the woman, the semen turned out to be dead, a condition that he had since birth. In the semen sample, there was no single living sperm detected because of his condition. The big question was whether the children belonged to a man or he had a helper. How did the woman convince the man that he was the biological father of the children, and later called for the testing of the man'...

Pleasure Marriage

If you come across the term for the first time, you will mistake it for a good thing. But the reality of the matter is that it is a sugarcoated phrase that hides the demeaning of women. The practice is common in Islamic states, especially Iraq. A documentary done by Journeyman Tv reveals lays bare the men in cloth in Baghdad who act like pimps, sexually exploiting young girls and vulnerable women. Pleasure marriage is a form of prostitution because it allows a man to pay for a wife albeit short term. It is believed by some Iraqis that these temporary marriages are allowed in the Islamic law. In an interview, a man claimed that pleasure marriages make one closer to God by marrying a woman, especially if she is poor, because she is helping her, by offering support to her children if she has any. One would then ask how pleasure marriages differ from prostitution. One amazing thing is that those who practice it say unlike prostitution, these marriages are legal and religious, even tho...

A Youth Centered Jamhuri day Celebration, or Just Another Gimmick

The Journey towards Freedom Image Credit: Anastasiia M|Getty Images December 12th 1963 is a year that is memorable and holds a significant place in the history of our nation. It is a time when we got ourselves out of the entanglement of our colonizers. blood was shed but for a noble course. Everything that we enjoy now, the freedom that we experience, the strides made through our self-rule, and many other stuff are a result of someone's blood. The journey has not been easy for most of us. Some Kenyans, especially those born in the early and late sixties are privileged to have experienced all five presidents of our nation, under different dispensations; Jomo Kenyatta's regime, with all the bright minds that called the shots, some of whom, word had it that they would have made the best leaders. The Kenyan 2030 economic blueprint was a result of a sessional paper done by the genius Tom Mboya. Then came the Moi regime, which led the country for 24 years. What we can remember h...

You Will Never Change the World, It Has Always Been Evil

Y ou Will Never Change The World. It Has Always Been Evil You probably have had the conviction to change “things” because you like it when things are done in a transparent manner. Evil detests you. It makes you feel so bad that to an extent that you get annoyed and ready to “harm” whoever is responsible for it. In a hospital, you see people struggling to hold on to life, calling for assistance from the clinicians, and the nurses, but nobody cares. You have heard of the phrase, “he/she won’t be the first one to die. We have seen worse cases,” and this made you so mad.   You have seen people who deserved something being shortchanged in spite of them meeting the set criteria. Recently in Kericho county, when names for nominated legislators were submitted, the person who was nominated for the member of the county assembly under the category of people living with disabilities, had no disability at all. Those who deserved the position were left languishing in the village despi...
