Fred Matiang’i calls for a transparent, free, and fair process as Kenya’s opposition moves to select a joint flag bearer ahead of 2027.

In a political landscape marked by intense jockeying for position and leadership, Dr. Fred Matiang'i has come out as a strong voice, not just as a presidential contender, but as a key figure in urging fairness, transparency, and unity among Kenya's opposition ranks. The former Interior Cabinet Secretary, who is running for the presidency under the Jubilee Party, has stressed that the opposition's method of choosing a joint flag-bearer must be open and fair. He said that such a process should not be decided secretly behind closed doors.

Who will be the choice?

This comes at a time when Kenya's main opposition coalition is trying to agree on a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election. Matiang'i argued that any attempt to pick a flag-bearer through boardroom agreements could undermine the coalition's credibility. This could end up fracturing the growing alliance. The Jubilee party flag bearer insisted that the process should be inclusive, transparent, and credible in order to inspire confidence among ordinary Kenyans.

This comes at a time when Edwin Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi influence has grown, with speculations over a Kalonzo-Sifuna alignment in the forthcoming election. Matiangi's remarks also come at a time when the opposition's unity is crucial in ensuring a strong competition against the incumbent. The opposition coalition has a wide range of leaders, all with varied interests. A selection process seen as unfair could drive a wedge between them and weaken their collective challenge against the Kenya Kwanza government. Voters want to see a process that reflects their aspirations, not just one engineered by elites in isolation. A transparent system could help build that trust.

Some members of the United Opposition have come out to criticize the Jubilee candidate's insistence on a formal selection method, interpreting it as an interference or a power play. This shows a delicate balance in opposition politics.

PNU Endorses Fred Matiang'i

As this happens, the Party of National Unity (PNU) said that it will not field a candidate in 2027 and formally endorsed Dr. Fred Matiangi as a presidential contender. This inspired fresh momentum for the Jubilee candidate, reflecting a strategic positioning within the opposition politics for the PNU party. This comes amid discussions about how the opposition should unify ahead of the next election cycle.

PNU leaders led by Hon Mwangi Kiunjuri emphasized the decision was a strategic alliance with Jubilee, rather than a move that would weaken ties with other opposition parties in the United Opposition. By backing Matiang'i, PNU signals that it sees him as a credible alternative with the requisite experience and leadership qualities needed to compete at the national level.

Historically, Jubilee and PNU share a legacy in Kenyan governance, under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta and the late Mwai Kibaki. This unity, therefore, appeals to voters who value political experience and institutional memory. PNU's direction will pile pressure on other opposition parties and leaders to clarify their own positions and strategies ahead of opposition decisions.

What Next

As 2027 draws near, the format and fairness of presidential aspirant selection mechanisms within parties will remain a key issue. It is only the United Democratic Party that has a formidable candidate, and every Kenyan is waiting to see who the opposition will settle on. Dr. Matiang'i insistence on a transparent process may influence how parties negotiate power sharing and candidate endorsement moving forward. Meanwhile, his growing support base will play a key role in how other parties calculate their political strategy.
